Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to common questions. For data corrections, use the contact form with the page URL.

What is my mom’s cousin to me?

Your parent’s first cousin is your first cousin once removed. Infamile’s phrase decoder and dedicated guides explain the shared ancestor (your great-grandparent) step by step.

What is my cousin’s child to me?

Your first cousin’s child is your first cousin once removed. Second cousins’ children are second cousins once removed, and so on.

Why doesn’t Infamile show surname meanings?

Etymology requires citable scholarly sources per name. The Census file provides frequency only. We prefer an empty meaning note over guessed origins.

How current are baby name rankings?

Rankings reflect the latest year present in our SSA import. The year is shown on each name page. Imports run on a schedule documented in the admin dashboard.

Is Name Lab telling me how many people share my name?

No. It multiplies two independent public frequencies to estimate how uncommon a combination is. Treat it as a statistical illustration, not a population count.

Do you offer state-level baby name data?

State breakdowns require a separate SSA state import. Until that dataset is loaded, state pages show an explicit unavailable message rather than national numbers mislabeled as state data.
