Social Security Administration — national baby names
The SSA publishes annual counts and ranks of first names assigned at birth nationwide, split by sex, from 1880 forward. Infamile currently loads national series through 2024 for name detail pages, popularity lists, and Name Lab. Direct downloads from ssa.gov may be blocked by CDN rules from this host; when that happens we use a public Internet Archive mirror of the same national SSA baby-name series and record the source URL on the import log. State-by-state SSA files are not loaded yet (ssa.gov returns HTTP 403 from this server); state views show an explicit unavailable state instead of mislabeled national totals.
U.S. Census Bureau — surnames (2000 & 2010)
The Census surname files list roughly 150,000–162,000 surnames with frequency counts and proportions. Infamile uses the 2010 file for current rankings and proportions, and the 2000 file for rank/count trends on surname pages. Meaning and origin are not included unless verified separately.
Relationship content
Kinship definitions and cousin math are authored by Infamile and validated against standard genealogical references. The resolver engine runs entirely on our servers — no third-party kinship API.
Update cadence
A weekly cron job checks SSA and Census HTTP metadata for newer files. Sitemaps rebuild weekly. Manual re-imports are available from the Infamile admin dashboard when new releases are confirmed.
